The Species Observations reporting system is a service that is open to both professional and amateurs to report species sightings. It is heavily used with around 2 million new observations added each year.

In November 2021 the system has reached over 26,4 million sightings. This makes the database one of the largest of its kind in the world that shares its records freely.

It involves a unique cooperative effort between NGOs, government agencies and volunteers.

Important contributor to Species Map Service

The Species Observations reporting system is largely based on volunteers, who contribute observations, documentation, and their knowledge of different species.

These observation reports account for more than 67 % of the species occurrences in the Species Map Service database (In Norwegian language)

These data are valuable contributions to the overall understanding of Norway’s biodiversity and are used by a range of public institutions for both research and management purposes.
